While it won’t be the first time the cathedral has evolved since it was first completed in 1260 (in fact, the spire that burned this week was added during a long restoration project which began in the 1840s), it will mark the end of an era for the world-famous edifice. In light of this, it’s probable that a different structure will rise from the ashes. Now, the process of rebuilding has begun, with Prime Minister Édouard Philippe announcing Wednesday that France will hold an international architecture competition to find the best design for a newly restored Notre-Dame. Flames ripped through the landmark, which burned for several hours, and by the time the blaze was extinguished, the building’s iconic spire had collapsed. Much of the world has been in mourning since the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris caught fire on April 15.
